The first Freedom Summer was a 1964 voter registration project in Mississippi, part of a larger effort by civil rights groups such as the Congress on Racial Equality (CORE) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to expand black voting in the South.
It is in this same spirit that Faith in Texas declares this summer a Freedom Summer – a time to call all people in our community to stand with us for freedom. Freedom from crushing debt, mass incarceration, deportation, and underfunded schools. Freedom from racism and dehumanization.
